Key Takeaways

• Bug-riddled dual-screen Android software crashes constantly, freezes gestures, and misplaces keyboards.
• Sluggish touch responsiveness where taps are missed or misregistered as swipes, making typing a torture.
• A pathetic single 11MP camera delivers blurry, noisy shots and requires clumsy screen flipping to view.
• No outer display for glanceable info, zero NFC support for contactless payments, and missing 5G.

✅ Pros

• Impossibly thin and elegant dual-glass engineering
• Buttery-smooth 360-degree friction hinge
• Decent for side-by-side reading and spreadsheets

❌ Cons

• Disastrous software bugs and system freezes
• Unresponsive touchscreen and severe input lag
• Abysmal 11MP camera performance
• Lacks NFC, 5G, and cover notification screen

📝 Verdict

"Surface Duo is an engineering marvel ruined by catastrophic software bugs and an atrocious camera."

Key points

• Used for about two to three weeks; he says upfront that most people shouldn't buy it, and many problems come from it being Microsoft's first-generation foldable and first Android phone
• Pros: an ultra-thin body (each half only slightly thicker than the USB-C port) and a 360-degree hinge that stays at any angle, supporting book, Compose, single-screen, tent and other postures; dual-screen multitasking is very practical
• The software reacts in complicated ways when entering various postures and has plenty of bugs; the camera is only good for occasional video calls or scanning documents
• It lacks wireless charging, IP rating, 5G, a headphone jack and a high refresh rate; haptics aren't good, and app support is limited

✅ Pros

• Ultra-thin body and excellent hinge
• Dual-screen multitasking productivity

❌ Cons

• Many software bugs
• Poor camera
• No wireless charging, water resistance, 5G or high refresh rate
• Limited app support

📝 Verdict

Skip the first generation for now, but he's optimistic about the dual-screen concept and looks forward to the Surface Duo 2.

Key points

• A US$1,400 dual-screen Android device with which Microsoft wants to bring Windows-style multitasking productivity to a phone: two apps side by side is the core of the design
• Good choices: extremely thin (about 10mm closed, under 5mm open), no exterior camera or screen, and a smooth, sturdy 360-degree hinge
• Bad choices: the bezels are too thick, and the gap between the two screens makes spanning apps awkward; the 11MP camera is terrible
• It has Google services, and he compares it to a 2020 BlackBerry: good for work, but too buggy
• The similarly priced Note20 Ultra has split screen, a stylus and a better camera, and can also run Microsoft apps

✅ Pros

• Good multitasking concept
• Extremely thin
• Excellent hinge

❌ Cons

• Buggy
• Poor camera
• Thick bezels
• Overpriced

📝 Verdict

Not ready yet; there are great ideas but the execution falls short, and if it weren't US$1,400 the conclusion might be different.

• Channel: MrMobile [Michael Fisher] | Type: Professional review | Based on: YouTube transcript

Key points

• He thinks the Duo shouldn't be treated as a phone but as a pocket Surface; as a first-generation product it's high-risk, and most people shouldn't buy it
• The biggest surprise is battery life: with 16 hours of use a day for two weeks, it never died before midnight; it also fits in a pocket better than expected
• The lack of an outer screen can be solved with a smartwatch; folded back into a single screen, it's like a wide, ultra-thin phone
• Dual screens are sometimes very useful, such as checking Google Maps while walking and reading Twitter at the same time; the Surface Pen works on both screens (sold separately)
• He thinks the concept is clear but the execution poor: the camera is merely passable, software misses outnumber highlights, and the price sits between the Note20 Ultra and the Z Fold2

✅ Pros

• Battery life beyond expectations
• Extremely thin and easy to pocket
• Hinge and magnetic feel
• Supports the Surface Pen

❌ Cons

• Poor camera
• Unstable software
• High price
• Pen not included

📝 Verdict

It's an oddball he wants to love, but he can only recommend it to the most hardcore Microsoft fans.
